About this game

A board game about noticing what you think, how you feel, and what you do next. Players travel across the land, meet its characters, work around the obstacles in their way, and answer questions along the road.

The questions are the game. They give children a reason to talk about confidence, worry, frustration and pride without being asked to sit down and discuss their feelings, which most children will refuse to do. Playing gives them somewhere else to look while they answer.

CBTrail draws on cognitive behavioural techniques, the same practical ideas therapists use to help children connect thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Here they are built into a game the family plays together at the kitchen table.

How it plays

Two to five players, 30 to 50 minutes. Move along the trail, meet what the trail throws at you, and answer the card you draw. Children who like winning have something to win; children who need a reason to talk have a reason.

Good for

  • Children who find direct questions about feelings uncomfortable
  • Families who want something to do together that is not a screen
  • Therapists, counsellors and school staff working with children one to one or in small groups

In the box

  • 100 question and event cards
  • 1 game board
  • 1 die

  • Easy to learn, kids love it, and great for strengthening emotional intelligence

I use this game during counseling sessions as a school psychologist, but I think this would be a great game to play at home with kids. It's super easy to play, and the kids love it. I don't think the kids realize that they are learning.

  • The effectiveness of the product

This game is wonderful for younger players. I tried to play with my 14 year old and he was not engaged at all. However, in my practice setting this is a much more useful game even if we just use the cards and not necessarily the board game. I ran a group where we used the questions as ice breakers and it really helped the group facilitate a therapeutic and healing discussion. Again the board game is for the younger ones but the cards can definitely be used with teens and adults.

  • Love this for little ones!

I love the concept of the game!! Definitely geared towards younger aged crowds! My kiddos love the bright colors and it’s very fun to role play characters and design story line along the completion of the game!

  • Powerful tool for kids

I recently purchased this game for my children and I was pleasantly surprised at the positive results we have seen. My children were able to learn how their thoughts, emotions and behaviors are all linked in a fun and interactive way. The game was easy to understand and well designed, with helpful graphics and an engaging story line. We felt that it was an effective way to help them learn how their actions can be influenced by their thoughts and feelings.

  • Great game to help therapists establish rapport with young children.

I am a mental health counselor who works with a lot of young children. I use interactive games as part of my therapy. I was needing a good board game to help with establishing rapport while at the same time encouraging the children to open up. This game does both. It is very visually appealing. The game is non competitive and the children like the theme of the game. The questions are neutral which helps children who are fearful of expressing themselves feel comfortable. This is my go to game with most of my new clients.

  • Great Thought-Provoking Game

I purchased this game for my 6-year-old to help her learn better self-regulation skills. She loves playing board games, so I thought it could be a good tool for her. So far, she loves playing it and calls it the "feelings game". I like how the cards provoke thought and introspection. Some of the verbiage is a bit mature for her, so we sometimes need to rephrase the questions and prompts using vocabulary she can understand. The game itself is well-made. The game board is sturdy. However, it ripped in half the second time we put it away. We had some book-binding tape on hand, so I taped it back together and used it to reinforce the other folds. I also appreciate the thick and sturdy question/prompt cards. We appreciate that each stack of cards has a coordinating-organza bag to keep them organized in the box. In the future, purchasing booster packs of cards would be great to keep the prompts fresh and interesting.

  • Incredible investment in your child's mental health

My daughtr loves this game and brought it in for her class to play as well. Everyone learned a lot of themselves and others and I feel it has helped my kiddo regulate her emotions

  • Easy to pay and nice design

We loved the game. It is easy to play it and to learn about the game rules. Because the game is easy to understand it will fit young children too. Each player must read a card and answer a question. The board and the cards have nice colors and designs. The cards ask different questions which creates a nice dynamic between players. Great to explore and express feelings thoughts and other emotions.
